Hello Everyone, I found this dime today in my change and it has a peculiar lump on the face and a moon shaped indent on the back. Its probably damage, but I have to ask if it could be the Rockwell Hardness Test.

It is a damaged coin, punched through the reverse.

@cps, a good way to assess whether a mark like this occured at the mint or afterward is to look at the other side of the coin. You noticed a "lump" on the obverse and this extra metal was pushed there when the concave mark was being applied to the reverse. This could not have occured prior to the coin being struck.

As far as semantics are concerned this is not a variety or error of any kind. It is called PMD (post mint damage).

It's Post Strike Damage ( PSD), not an error or variety. This didn't happen at the U.S. Mint, so it's neither of them.
Errers and Varietys.
