Hard to tell from photos, but most of the time this happens when two coins get glued together and then popped back apart, leaving a negative image in glue on top of one of the coins.

Thanks for the response, but this is definitely stamped into the coin, not glue residue.

Could be what is referred to as a 'vise job'. Two coins are held together and squeezed or struck transferring a reverse stamped image from one coin to the other.
Check out my counterstamped Lincoln Cent collection: http://goccf.com/t/303507

Thanks! I've never heard of that before, why would someone do that?

Quote: Thanks! I've never heard of that before, why would someone do that? When I was a kid we'd play with torches and heat pennies to cherry red, and then beat them together with hammers. Why? Because if was fun. I grew up in a very mechanical environment and had easy access to tools. Post a photo of your penny from an angle. Something is strange. If that was pressed in a vise, I would have expected to see some damage on the reverse.

Seems to be some sort of counterstamp. Scene seems to be part of Tiananmen Square, China.

To CCF! That's glue residue on your coin. Since this happened after it left the U.S. Mint (after the strike), it's Post Strike Damage ( PSD).
Errers and Varietys.

The area I circled is indicative of glue.

I am definitely in the glue camp. That is also the reason the coin is a different color in that area. I suspect a soak in acetone would remove it.

That area is where you are saying glue is depressed, not raised. I think I'll see a pro about this one
