A couple weeks ago I found a 1950D Jefferson nickel at a little antique shop for $7.50. I didn't realize how much they were worth until I got home and looked it up. So I went there this morning and, to my surprise, it was still there. So I bought it, and now I'm looking at it and the "D" looks ever so slightly out of place. All of my other old D-mint nickels has the D right in the corner of the step and the wall of the building, but this one is a little higher and the D is a little closer to the rim than the wall. The middle of the D is right over the end of the step. The coin is about vg, and looks very authentic. Is it common for the D to be in a slightly different spot? I'd love to show a pic, but I don't have a camera.

yes. it's common for the mintmark to float around... (I asked the same question a couple of months ago).

Great Buy.

Okay, that's a bit of a relief. I was pretty sure it was good, but not knowing for sure was bugging me.
Thanks a lot.

BTW, I was surprised to find such a good deal at this shop; their coins are usually overpriced, or right at the Red Book value.

Now I'm only missing one nickel in the first two pages of my Whitman folder, a 1938S. I got the 1939D for 10 cents from the bag of random old nickels at my local coin shop.

you should be able to pick a circulated example of that up at just about any coin store for around a dollar or two.

Yeah those floating dates. For a long, long time I was putting many coins in 2x2's for my error coin collection due to the Mint Marks being in really odd locations. On Cents some were almost part of the dates. Then I contacted https://www.coppercoins.com and they explained that way, way back Mint Marks were put on coins separately and that is why they are all over the place. Today they are part of the die so that doesn't happen. Oh well there went about half of my error collection.

I still keep the ones seemingly out of place.

Is a 1950-D nickel a good buy at $11 in BU condition?

......Yup.....sadly that's pretty common !....everybody wants to make their money on even an insignificant coin let alone semi-keys to keys.........and if your "shop" is a "coin shop".....unless you have a relationship with the owner....they're DEFINATELY going to make their money !...

$11 for a BU '50-D is pretty good. Depends how good the strike is on obv & rev, and if there limited/minimal contact marks. Although it's the lowest mintage number, to be worth good money it's really condition/strike dependent.

Actually, eaglefoot, it's more like a small antique store. People pay a lady for a small section of the store, she sells the stuff for them, and she gets x% of the profit. So one of these people are selling coins, and since my parents go in there often, I always look at the coins. They have Merc. dimes for $1.25 and up, Morgans about $18-ish, and I keep seeing a roll of 1943 steel wheats, I don't know what they're worth, but I doubt they're worth $16. Some of them appear to be rusted as well.

As for a BU 1950D for $11, I'm not sure exactly what they're worth, but I'd pay $11 for one.

Oh yeah, as for my "coin shop," his prices are pretty fair. For higher grade and especially key dates in any condition, he seems to be a little pricey, but still fair, I guess. But he sells me low-end stuff like wheats and old nickels for real cheap. So I'd give the "antique store" a "D" and the "coin shop" a B+
