Sounds like you have a Morgan dollar with dark toning or enviro damage.

Does it look like the coin in the link below?

While Morgan dollars are made of silver, they do sometimes tone to a black color.

So 1881.. it couldn't be a cent, or any of the Seated coinage as that's too different. It can't be a 3-cent because it says UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and 1881 on the same side.

So if indeed it is a Morgan as shown above, be sure to check the mintmark - below the wreath (above DO in DOLLAR) there might be an additional letter - S, O, or CC.

Since you were SO far off on reading the date the first time.......
My guess is that you have the date wrong again and you are looking at a Large Cent !.....these have the date on the obverse and "United States of America" on the reverse.
Course, could easily be a Morgan too.....
If it "kinda" looks like DL20K's Avatar.....could be either one !
How sure are you on the date ?

Can someone help you with the pics ?.......the mystery would be over in a flash! (no pun intended) !......

Do you suspect it's a 1831 large cent then? It does look similar and that would also explain the black color. The longer we wait, the wilder theories will arise

Yeah.....dunno DL20K .....
For some reason......the "dark color" makes me think of the "Large Cent" here.....that was my immediate instinct guess.....
And if it's "so worn" that the date is that hard to discern.....
Just gotta wait for the pics I guess !.........

On the other hand....."One Cent" should be able to be seen on the reverse I would think........don't know just "how worn" this coin is though.
