How would you grade this 25 Gourdes 1968 Haiti Coin. It has some toning.

Any takers?

According to NGC, it looks like this was only issued in proof, which makes this a rather badly abused proof?

Alas I have no idea how that translates to a grade (but I am sure someone else will).

I have always like the Haitian coat of arms ... don't see palm trees combined with cannons anywhere else as afar as I know.

This one had me scratching my head:
Why isn't it a proof?

Before grading, need to check for accurate weight.

Krause lists KM67.1 ('AR' in LH rev. field), and
KM67.2 ('1 AR' in rev. LH field),
both as proof only,
for all dates (IC1967,IC1968,IC1969,IC1970 and all KM67.1), and (1970 KM67.2), for this type.

I have known Krause to be wrong in other instances, but that is mostly in relation to estimated values.

That is why the weight of 117.6 grams needs to be confirmed, by weighing it.

Do not like the absence of luster for an uncirculated coin, that is in otherwise near to pristine condition.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your comments! I also like the Haitian coat of arms:)

I will weight it if helpful and report back, but I pretty sure it is a proof coin. I have the associated documentation that I can post if helpful. It was purchased at a bank by mother a while back.

I have noticed online that these coins don't have luster when aged. See https://www.blackmountaincoins.com/...m-haiti.html

Do you think I should send this in for grading. I don't want it to get damaged anymore so I am also buying an air tight case.

Cheers!

If the weight turns out to be accurately correct, it may be a proof, unreported in Krause. As such it may be rarer than the standard proof, but I completely unable to confirm, either way.

Give it a good soak in acetone, that may bring back the proof surfaces, if it has any.

Can you explain why it may be rare if it is a proof, I am confused.

Thanks!

The coin pictured does not look like a proof (no mirror finish). If it is not a proof, Krause may prove to be wrong, by not reporting it.
With some other World issues, the uncirculated non proof issue is rarer than the equivalent proof issue. That may be the case here.

On the other hand, the coin may be fake. That is why I said that the weight has to be accurately confirmed, it's weight being exactly 117.6 grams, as reported in Krause.
