Can someone please tell me the difference between the United States coins Red Book and the Blue Book. For years I have been buying the Red Book. Does the Blue book have better information?

The Blue Book is supposed to give a selling price that dealers might pay for coins; the Red Book is supposed to give fair market value for coins. Dealers can't pay fair market value, as they have to make a profit to keep stores open. So values listed will be lower in the Blue Book.

Mostly people think the Red Book is the highest price a coin should sell for. However, that always depends on where it is being sold. The Blue Book is always thought to be the lowest prices any coin is really worth. I wonder what answer you would get if you sent in such a question to Whitman Publishing co?

Why not just produce a purple book and emphasize it is just a guide.
A coins appearance, strike quality etc affects its value.
Rest in Peace

I don't even know why they still make a Blue Book . Has anyone sold a coin recently to a dealer and gotten a blue book price for it ? Probably not .

In theory, the RedBook is retail values, the bluebook are wholesale, and the values listed in either one have no relationship to the real world.

On page 6 of the current paperback edition of the Blue Book is the following:

"THIS BOOK LISTS PRICES MANY COIN DEALERS WILL PAY".

And:

"These are averages of prices assembled from many widely separated sources."
