At first glance I thought this was your typical PMD coin. The color could be attributed to just about anything making it turn that way. But what I thought was Zinc rot on the rims and areas on the edge turned out to be actual numbers and letters that are inset in those black areas. For instance, an "S" can be seen here to the left of Liberty in those inset markings:

In this photo you can see the number to to the right on the rim:

Believe It or Not There is a number or letter in every black divot or insect that you see on this coin as for the color I am not sure what is going on with it I thought possibly to reach out on a very long limb that it could be the wrong metal but doubtful. Here are some more pictures and I appreciate you having a luck and set me straight on what's going on here...

No, it's all damage. There's absolutely no possible way that could happen at the U.S. Mint. It's 100% Post Strike Damage ( PSD).

And I couldn't agree more. But. How do you explain it? They are strikes with numbers/letters in them. No question about it. Being post mint damaged then you are saying that somebody takes and stands those on an angle to hit those directly on the rim at an angle not flat on the face of the edge? I've had many coins like this with just a hit or two here and there but even that can't be explained how is it being done is what I would like to know without doubting anybody's opinion...
