I buy a lot of proof sets. I purchased a bunch with a 1970 set , unopened. I open the set and the penny has a black greasy finger print on the OV and grease all over the back. I always thought the sets were never touched buy hands.

Yeah--ouch, hope not. I've seen finger prints on {mint} sets from the 70s, and I suspect the finger print was invisible when packaged and corroded over time.

Yeah, but sadly, just because it's an old "proof set" DOESN'T mean that no one has opened it in years past, took each coin out and looked at them with their fingers carelessly and then snapped them back into place !!
At the mint too when it was packaged......
