It's in a slab - which I don't mind cracking if I can get good results without having a details coin. By the age of the holder I would think it has been encased for 15 or more years. It has a straight TPG grade of MS62 - understanding that the green could have formed after the grading was done. Not an expert at 'refurbishing' - any suggestions are appreciated.

TPG's do offer coin conservation services. Might try Verdi Care. John1

Quote: without having a details coin The only sure way is conservation. There are no doubt other products which would help, but there is always a risk from what I have read others post over the years.

Both good suggestions, but personally I'd leave well enough alone, especially if it's in a major TPG holder.

That's a darn nice Half Cent . If your ok with the cost I would crack it out and send in for conservation and regrade from another TPG . It's possible to get a 63BN out of it .

If you're willing to crack it, I'd try Verdi. Or alternatively crack it and send it to NGC, which would not be necessary if it's already in an NGC holder. If it's already in that NGC holder just submit it to NCS who'll crack it and forward it to NGC for grading. That way you don't have to assume the risk

If I send it to NCS ( It's in a NGC holder ) and ask for crack-out and conservation, would there be a chance they would possibly upgrade it from it's original 62 to a 63? ... or would they not consider an upgrade since they originally graded it at 62?

Good question. Do you really want to spend more money on this with zero guarantee of a more valuable coin?

If you're going to do anything you basically have two options that make the most sense. You can crack it and send to PCGS which would be risky or send it back to NGC for conservation since they originally graded it. Now if you do send it to NGC they may decline to do anything and keep it as is. Upgrades are possible after conservation, but so is a downgrade. They do their best not to do anything that would downgrade it but there's no guarantees and I don't believe their guarantee would even apply if it's a copper coin graded 15 years ago. My suspicion would be this is one that is better left alone and if it really bothers you sell it and get one you like better.

Totally agree. Leave this one alone.

You also need to understand the risk that sending it in for conservation entails. It is possible the coin could be damaged while cracking the slab, handling the raw coin, or especially during the conservation attempt. We have seen on this forum in the past where aggressive "conservation" attempts by the TPGs resulted in severely damaged coin surfaces.
The coin looks attractive as is, and I don't see the green corrosion you mention. If I were you I'd leave it.

Thanks all for you input - lots of good points. I will most likely leave it as it is. Maybe I'll find another that I like better and do a sell and buy..... Great to get all the thought provoking answers.

The NGC guarantee only applies to copper coins for 10 years after certification.
