Thought I'd share this story...I was having trouble figuring out if I had satins or not, so I bought them in original cello so that I was sure. Then, I thought I should collect all the cellos, so I got those. Then, since cellos started in 1959, I bought the Franklins too. Then, since I realized I was still missing some uncirculated mint sets, my ocd kicked in and I was "forced" to pick up the following sets (but I'm not taking the half dollar out of those sets): 1965-1967 SMS, 1976 silver uncirculated set,1982-1983 souvenir sets,2014 50th Anniv. Uncirculated set, 2014 50th Anniv. Silver set. These were in addition to the unc business strikes and proofs I have in a CAPS album. My cellos are heat sealed in 2.5 inch Saflips and stored in 16 pocket polypropylene binder pages. So be careful, it can all start out innocently. What is next, me buying the gold coin? I hope not.

Welcome to CCF. I agree that considering a gold coin purchase puts you on a very slippery pathway.

Don't worry, there are many more of us that have fallen into a similar hole as you did. My journey started out with the innocent joy of picking up circulated coins. Boy, that sure was fun...for awhile. All of a sudden all I needed to complete my sets were a handful of very expensive 'key dates'.
The trouble was that I acquired a bad habit of satisfying myself by picking up a new coin or two every week or so.
So, being in a bad spot of not having the hundreds of dollars to get the last of the circulated coins I needed, I bought a few proofs. Boy, they were soooooooo shiny; I needed all of them too!

When that got to the point when the last ones of those got too pricy, I decided to get into Canadian coins. Naturally, I went from circulated to proof to specimens to proof-like.
It just doesn't stop!

I should have never got addicted to buying any coins besides the USA circulated. By now, I would have completed all my sets, had an empty credit-card balance, and have a bank account with enough cash in it that I could go somewhere for a nice vacation every year.

Coin collecting; what rubbish!
