numismatic student Bedrock of the Community United States 11880 Posts	Posted 05/12/2019 9:29 pm vf25-30 sounds about right Although the 1861-O is fairly common, that is the case because they were hoarded due to their historical significance. 330k coins were minted while the New Orleans Mint was under the authority of the U.S. Government. 1.24 million coins were minted under the authority of The State of Louisiana after it seceded from the Union, and about 893k coins were issued under the authority of the Confederate States of America. Collectors love to attribute this year's die pairs to match the months when the NOLA Mint was run under these three authorities. Of the 15 die marriages, 2 die pair varieties are attributed to January 1861 when it was run by the USA, 6 die pairs are attributable to when Louisiana was running the Mint in February and March, and the remaining 7 pairs are attributable to the CSA. Complete sets of the 15 die pairs come up once in a while and are always historically thrilling to view together. Bill Bugert at the LSCC provides a great references for this issue, the most widely collected in the Liberty Seated half dollar series.
