AU details(ED). I think the issue on the rim is sufficient to details this coin and possibly bag it. lets see if everyone agrees or not

Don't think I see any ED here, but agree the rim issue would probably detail it.

Is the coin cleaned do you think? I think, the picture at least, looks nice.
Rest in Peace

Nice sharp coin but besides the obverse scratches , the rim damage on the reverse details it . AU-55 Details .

Looks like a beaver attacked the rim and then got in a knife fight with lady liberty.

how much should a details grade detract from AU55? 50%?

its whatever you think the coin is worth to you. if you need a 1908S and you like it then you need to decide how much is it worth to you. there is no hard and fast rule that I'm aware of for pricing details coins. I think more rare coins would command more even with a details designation. looking at this coin again I'm seeing some deep striations running from the brow through the eye and cheek down to the chin. I'm thinking this coin was possibly cleaned or wiped with something to cause these. adding this with the rim issue. I'm a pass but that's your call.

a nice clean example without any issues in mid AU would be in the $600-800 range. if you twisted my arm and forced me to buy it I wouldn't pay more than VF money for it
