The wide rim (close date) was a change over that started in Philly and then all of them had it on the 1980 and forward coins.

I would really like to know what the population of these wide rims are. 100,000, 5,000,000?

Depending on how many die pairs were struck. Probably 750K per die pair. Times how many dies they used with that setup.
