About a month ago, I remember a topic regarding ordering Ike dollars, if it was possible. I work for one of the largest banks in the world and part of my job is to order currency from an armored car service to meet customer demands. In case anyone doesn't know, few banks keep a large cash supply, they contract an armored car service to provide cash and safe delivery of cash and coin. These armored car services are contracted through the FED to securely store massice amounts of coin and currency to meet the needs of consumers all over the country. Now, back to the Ikes! As I said, I order currency on a daily basis through an armored car service and have developed a few contacts over time. I called my best contact to see if it were possible for a bank to order IKES, or if they happened to carry any in stock. She makes a phone call over to coin services and returns my call the next day. First, she verifies that I want IKES, the larger dollar coins. I say yes and she says they have thousands of them, nobody ever orders them and "they have been collecting dust in cloth bags" for some time now. My jaw just drops! The only problem she tells me is that I have to find a bank that will order them for me because the armored car service does not deal directly witht the public. Most don't want to waste time just to have the customer return the coins after searching through them. She even goes one step further to ask if I'm looking for specific dates, something I'm looking for in particular. My goal before the end of this year is to try go through a few bags of IKES. I figure, I could either spend them, divide them up on this site or sell to a dealer for face or a little above. I'm betting there are at least a few silver dollars in there, especially if the bags are old. To answer all questions about availability, THEY CAN BE ORDERD and armored services do have them in stock!

Yeah, there have been posts on this before.
The Chicago area Fed bank has these still in original bags too. Anyone who's bank gets it coin from there can order UNC Ikes at face value.

For some of us its a huge pain in the butt just to get rolls of anything not to mention Ike dollars.

As ratio said, this has been rattled around before but yet I have yet to see anyone get any.
In addition, I guess I don't get the big deal. 1. I really don't see any significant potential for silver (almost all the silver Ikes were special issues and were not part of proof/mint sets and were the famous blue and brown ikes - so "accidental" additions to circulation become rarer) 2. Unless they are GEM UNC, there really isn't any premium associated with them - even if they've been sitting around for years, remember that they haven't been in circualation for YEARS either. They'll most likely be circulated and got that circulation in the late 70's and early 80's - over 20 years ago. 3. There ARE the varieties - peg leg and 1972 varieties - the 1976 varieties don't amount to much, but that's really the only reason I would start salivating.
Don't mean any kind of "sour grapes", but let's see it happen to someone and then find out what they find before all the trumpets start blowing

I have asked BOA to order them for me several times and have had zero success. What area of the country are you in (Silver Eagle)?

I cant even get BOA to order me halves. I think that they are one of those banks that would rather not have to deal with the coins, but it could just be my branch as well.

OK so what is the secret code or magic words. I live in the Chicago area. I have accounts in 5 different banks. I know many people that work in the Bank of America that used to be LaSalle. I've asked at all 5 about ordering Ike dollars. I had the feeling they would have laughed at me except I'm a good customer and have been for a long time. OK so which banks in this area can I order them from? I don't want to spend days going from bank to bank in the downtown area for nothing. Any suggestions?

There was a teller at US bank who told me that he would order things for me if I bought them all at the min he had to order In half dollars. Susan b's etc. I will have to see if he can get them. I think that the banks in this area are through the fed reserve in Cleveland. It would be really cool to get some ikes at face because I think I have like 8 holes in that book.

I asked about ordering Ikes from my BoA and they said it wasn't possible. What a pity. I need to ask around more, I suppose.

I just went back to Bank of America in Franklin Park, Illinois. Went to a officer sitting at nice expensive desk. Told him I've been a customer for a long time and is there a possibility of ordering Ike dollar coins. He smiled and asked if I was joking. Then he said are you aware that they don't make them any more. I smiled back and said REALLY? Regardless can you order me some? Answer: We have a waiting list for customers that want those so if you just add your name to the list and if any come in and none of the names before you don't want them, you can have them. Again, I said NO, I want you to order them from the Federal Reserve downtown on LaSalle Street. His continuous smiling finally got to me so I left. I wonder if I should try the Federal Reserve in downtown Chicago myself. Pass by many times and might be fun.
