We wouldn't have to become a republic to remove the Queen from the obverse, because there's no law in place that says the monarch has to be there. The Coinage Act of 1965 gives the Treasurer the power to set the designs of the coins to whatever he/she wishes. Several other countries of which the Queen is also head of state don't show the Queen on their coins; Papua New Guinea is a good example.
Of course, the opposite is also true - we could become a republic and keep the Queen there anyway; this is presently the state of affairs in Fiji.

i dont think the queen would stay if we did become a republic, it would be symbolic to remove her I think.

Anybody as long it isn't that Rudd clown. Oops, that's political. I remove the comment. LOL.
Seriously, I am not a Monarchist but the Queen could still grace the obverse side of our coinage for mine.

I'm an American, but my Two Cents' worth -- Hope the Queen stays on the obverse. She seems to be a good and honest person, and I think a Monarch design is very attractive on coins. Of course we wouldn't want George III to replace Lincoln, Jefferson, FDR, Washington, or JFK.
