I partway bought the two Obsoletes from the guilt I felt from taking so much of Eds time...thank goodness they were fairly inexpensive. I talked with him for half an hour, I felt obligated to buy something.

Here is the $2 Treasury (or Coin) Note of 1891, bearing the portrait of one of my favorite Civil War generals, James McPherson. The signature combination of Tillman/Morgan dates the printing of this note to 1893-1897.  Edited by Coinfrog

Thanks. The large notes are most impressive in hand - scans hardly due justice to them.

Beautiful Treasury Note Mr.Frog. Please forgive me but I'm a gonna do something I don't usually do. I'm posting a note I WISH I had. It's tremendous and deserves being seen on this thread. And as an added bonus, it's serial #1.   |

The "1" is in fact a serial number on a note such as this. The one you refer to is a Treasury designation, and has nothing to do with the bank's serial number.

To clarify, I believe you are actually correct, and I apologize.
According to Chambliss/Hessler, a standard reference work on this subject:
"Prior to 1925 a NBN had two different serial numbers...one was the sheet number for that particular note and the other was the Treasure sheet number...".
This, then, is from the first four-note sheet printed for this bank in this denomination.
You are correct, and I am wrong.

That seems to explain why I've seen sheets with notes with the same "serial number", it's actually the sheet number I presume. Begs the question, which number does PMG put on the holder?
