I'm about to leave for a month long trip to France, and I'm wondering if there's any point in searching euros. I assume it's mostly error coins that one would look for, since it's such a new currency. Are Euros worth the time and effort of searching, or is it just a waste of time?

The valuable coins are not in circulation. But it is so curious to look for different observes, in 2€ coins, there is hundreds of different designs.

Certainly look for errors. I'm from Finland so I don't know if any other circulating euro coins are worth to look for (Other people can chime in). But as for Finnish 2 € coins look for: 2004 2 € enlargement of European Union, worth about 20-30€ depending on condition and 2006 2 € wrong map error coin (Error coin map has Norway in it. Coin has to be year 2006) worth about 40-60 € depending on condition.

Quote: But it is so curious to look for different observes, in 2€ coins, there is hundreds of different designs. As txabs mentioned, there are so many varieties each year. Each country will have their regular mintages each year, and many will have special varieties each year also. This means that you might find 40, 50, or more coins for each year. In general, if your trip is mostly spent in France, maybe you can try to focus on just the French varieties. When I went to visit my son a couple years ago, I ended up in several countries and brought home lots of interesting coins; but nothing of significant value. Getting coins in change will be fun though as you never know what you'll be handed.

In addition to searching your change, be sure to search for good restaurant menus, charming villages, wonderful cheeses, and all the other things French culture has to offer.
