I bought my first box of Kennedy half dollars today. What years are the 90% silver, 40%, and what other years should I look for?

Also if I find silver ones what do you do with them? Do you melt them down and get the silver off or what?

Thanks.

the 1964 is 90% silver 65-70 are the 40% silver clad. Good luck in your search. At this point unless they are in outstanding condition I would say use them as trade fodder for other stuff you like.

1964 - both mints - 90%
1965~1970 - all three mints - 40%
1976 - S-Mint Silver Proof and NIFC (Uncirculated) - 40%
1992~date - S-Mint Silver Proof - 90%

There are some other varieties to look for as well, but since I am not a variety collector, I will let someone else chime in.

I would leave them intact, since they are a known quantity and purity of silver. If you melted them, then you would have to pay to have them assayed before they could be sold. Most bullion and coin dealers will buy them as coins, paying at a certain percentage of spot price. What that percentage is varies widely.

I hoard them like a Silver loving packrat. Then I will eventually sell them and buy an extra special few coins with the money!

2002 is the first official full NIFC year.

In 2001, the Fed stopped ordering them from the Mint, so very few 2001's ever made it into circulation that way.

Since the Fed stopped ordering them in 2001, the mint stopped making so many starting in 2002; only making enough for the annual mint sets.

That's basically MY theory too.......I've never sold a coin in my life. In twenty to thirty years, I "may" sell off my silver Kennedys and I may not.....silver will go up and down forever, but in "decade increments" I hope/intend that the "silver price" will be way up there at the time I do.....

Me either! This is where I mention that a good portion of my Franklin half dollar album (the portion that I did not find in rolls) was financed by trading in my duplicate silver half dollar finds!

Thanks for everyones help.
Apperantly I got a pretty good box. I have found 3 90% 8 40%, 2 that I think may be proofs, and a 63 Franklin.

Why should I look for 87's?

They were NIFC, only released in Mint Sets. I probably could have included that and the other NIFC years (1970, 2002+) in my initial list, but I was hung-up on the silver!
