I live on a decent size farm and I would like to do a little detecting on it. I know very little about metal detectors but would like to learn more. What is a good one to start out with?

Thanks for the advice!

I think the most simplest and cheapest is the one that Walmart sells , not sure of the brand name but this should get you familiar with using a detector . once you feel confident with it you can upgrade to better machines , and believe me there's a bunch of them out there that literally tells you what denomination the coin is or if it's junk metal .

Ditto the Garrett Ace 250. Great starting out with. Decent IDing, tells you what denomination of coin the targets may be, can consistently pick out most types of coins from one another but can struggle with differentiating copper cents and dimes. Can reach 6+ inches on occasion. I have found many silver coins with it.

I'm currently looking to upgrade to Ace 400, but I started out with Ace 250 and would recommend. It's the only real detector I've ever used, so I may be biased.

But of course what you should get definitely depends on your price range.

Save up to 50% or more buying a used machine.
The 'little yeller feller' (Ace) is a popular starter and there's a boatload of used machines for sale out there on Craigslist and the like.

Good advice to get a used one.

If you have a local pawn shop that may be a good place to look. Just be sure to test it out first. (Make sure it beeps when a coin is under the coil.)

Thanks everybody...I see where I can get a new one on ebay for around $210-$215. I'm going to look around and see if I can get a used one before I spend the money for a new one.

Ace 250 recommended from me as well. Solid detector.
