I enjoy collecting deceptive coinage and this is the first cob in the collection. Specific Gravity is 8.3 compared to about 10.3 if it was genuine. Parts of the obverse appear to be "peeling off". The edge and reverse have "holes & pits". Weight is way off at 17.7 grams and compares favorably to a bronze alloy.

Pure copper 8.93 g/c, pure silver 10.5 g/cc.
It looks to be 'coppery'.

Rub it with your fingers. Skin oils are slightly acidic and have sulphur as well. OK to do this, if it is a known fake.
The oils will react with the metal, and will give a distinctive 'copper' smell.
Not a greatly useful test, because high silver alloy (~80%) can smell similar.

By that, do you mean counterfeit or fake coinage?

Yes I do mean to include counterfeit and fake coinage as "deceptive".
I have collected and documented many.
Many Chinese that have never been represented here.
A superb field of study, discovery, seek and included in the hobby.
"Clandestine Coinage" can be a part of the study.
"Claimed Fakes" that proved to be genuine are a part.
"Claimed Genuine" coins that I bought and later proved to be fakes are also a part of the study.
