I went on bid on this one and got it. Had little idea what it was worth but just liked the looks of this little beauty. Might start chasing more of them. Lots of dates available at reasonable prices for BU coins. This one was graded MS66

These are great little coins!
I am glad that I happen to have an example in my own collection. Yours better condition than mine.

Tiny coins tend to retain their condition better, because there is less surface area to be affected by circulation damage.

Nice coins!
I sold off the only one I had (CuNi, not silver) some time ago. It was certainly not MS quality.

I think Costa Rica and Nicaragua also feature volcanoes on their coins.

Another one came in today. Less than $10. I mainly chase Canada coins but try and buy a Canadian coin this old in MS for under $10!

Another one but it cost more than $10 ($11 - har!). I thought at first it was back to the future. That first digit looks almost like a 4. But some years the "1" had a extra long serif.

These must not have circulated much. You see more nice ones of many years, than worn out examples.

John K I love your enthusiasm. Many of the tiny coins of the world are clearly underappreciated. Did you note that the long serif 1889 may be a double die or at least is has some re-punched elements? On this series like so many others, double dies are mostly uncatalogued and you can build a great collection of die varieties very inexpensively. Then when you tire of collecting hopefully many years off and you have become an expert in this tiny niche, you can publish a book about them to preserve what you have learned for other collectors.

I am doing this now with my 60 year old obsession. One warning be prepared to stop collecting after you publish. It happens every time. That is one reason I have waited until I heard the approaching hoofbeats of Mr. Reaper. But never be sad for me - instead rejoice that I have had 60 years involvement with a wonderful hobby that has given me literally thousands of hours of happiness.

Swamper (my favorite uncle's nickname) There are a bunch of repunched and over-dated 1/4 reals that I see offered. Don't have a real distinctive one yet but I keep bidding.

I need to get a better camera for these little guys. Hard to get good close-ups with what I am using.

Die clash makes this one look weird - but I like it. Lots of Machine Doubling on left side of volcanoes. small die crack, and maybe some repunched stars as well.

I can vouch for this. I collected a very niche area for years - wrote a book on it - stopped collecting that area straight after.

This particular series is great - I like these coins - though I only have one example. Writing something on them is certainly worth considering if you keep at it. Nice coins overall.

Got this one today. Appears to be a double die but I think just Machine Doubling.
