Hello,

I have a set of US Gold Vault $5 Gold American Eagle coins all of which have very noticable, darkened circular areas on their reverse sides and to a lesser degree on the front.

I'm trying to sell these coins and have already had them returned once by a collector due to this discoloration which, to be honest, I didn't even notice until he brought it to my attention when making the return request on ebay.

Just looking for some advice from you folks on how you would proceed with these coins if you were me.

Any and all input will be much appreciated.

I have no idea what these are from the small and blurry pictures.

to CCF. Can you post some close ups of one of the coins in question?

Apologies - I'm not a very experienced photographer and these blemishes are hard to capture.

Hopefully these are better - the discoloration manifests as a shadowy roughly circular area at the center of the coin.

My concern is that it is a fake. What is the weight?

Run Forrest, Run...

At best this is an after-market packaging of 5 1/10 ounce US Mint coins, i.e. 0.5 troy oz of gold, being sold for $800 or $900.

There is no information about them on the web and that doesn't boost confidence.

I just weighed all 5 with an ACPro-200 digital scale which has a stated 0.01 gram display resolution and they came out to 17.02 grams so roughly 0.6 ounces, right? Ballparkish.

Weighing all together doesn't really mean much, you should weigh separately. There is already a red flag, 5 should weigh 0.5 oz.

Ok, weighed separately

coin 1 = 3.41g
coin 2 = 3.41g
coin 3 = 3.41g
coin 4 = 3.41g
coin 5 = 3.42g

Those weights are in line. The "stain" is probably just copper toning, possibly from an improperly mixed alloy. These are just bullion coins anyway, so minimal effect on value.

I do apologize for my ignorance but can you tell me in layman's terms what I have here? According to the display container they came in they're supposed to be United States Gold Vault $5 Solid Gold American Eagle Coins. Is your assessment that this is not the case?

They belonged to my stepfather who passed away some years ago but used to like to buy things, including coins, off late night infomercials. I have no clue where they came from to be honest.

That is a misleading description. The term "solid gold" can be misleading, and these are not pure gold which is 24k gold, but rather approximately 22k. These coins are a common US mint bullion coin issue with minimal/no collector value over the gold melt and have nothing to do with any so-called "vault". These are the specifications:

Nint: Philadelphia
Obverse Designer: Augustus Saint-Gaudens
Reverse Designer: Miley Busiek
Composition: Gold
Fineness: 0.9167
Weight: 3.3900g
AGW: 0.1000oz
Melt Value: $134.01 (6/16/2019)
Diameter: 16.5mm
Edge: Reeded
