While the United States launched and landed the spacecraft, Canadians also have every reason to celebrate. In fact, many don't know that the landing gear for the Apollo 11 Lunar Module was designed by the Canadian company, Heroux-Devtek. Technically, Canadian technology was thus the first object of Apollo 11's mission to touch the Moon!
LANDING GEAR FROM QUeBEC! Heroux-Devtek, the Canadian company responsible for the successful landing of the Apollo 11, is located in Longueuil - a suburb of Montreal, Quebec. DESIGNED BY AN ONTARIAN! While the developing company is located in Quebec, its primary designer behind the first moon landing gear was the Canadian engineer, Owen Maynard, born in Sarnia, Ontario.

@ Silveroid
FYI: It's a dollar coin not $20. Same as the 5 oz one, only in 1 oz. (Hence: 1949 Silver Dollar Reproduction)

Thank you much, Jimper Should be attractive + affordable, imo (but then, RCM easily could decide to issue 2oz with selective gold plating coin this year for MC series)

I have had a couple of days to digest this release and must say that again, I am disappointed. 1) The moon landing commemoratives... Good idea but why convex. Destroys any group collection as they just don't fit with other coins. 2) Yet another Matthew.. Ok... but why a new size 34mm... really, why not 36 mm and matching the original or... any other SD. 3) 3oz map shaped coin... really... we are still doing the odd shaped artifacts and calling them coins 4) Rectangular flag coins... what are stamps now passe? 5) There are a couple of interesting Silver coins... I like the 1/2 kg Grizzly and I like the Matthew, even though it is the 2nd variant this year but for heaven's sake... I am not paying 5x-6x bullion value for a silver coin, regardless of the finish. If I love the coin, it will be available on the secondary market at 2x-3x bullion in 2-5 yrs and close to bullion in 10 years. So the star of the show... even at the ridiculous cost of $7 each is the 50c base metal specimen set of 5 wildlife treasures. Note to the RCM. I probably would have purchased the 2 moon coins if they were flat and the Matthew if it was 36mm.

If you are putting together an Apollo 11 50th anniversary collection, Canada's curved coins fit right in with the releases from the US, Austria and Australia which are also curved.

Another Canadian 'space' coin came as a convex. 'Canada viewed from Space' as seen by Roberta Bondar.

I picked up one of the silver Apollo 11 coins earlier today. I decided it would pair well with my US Apollo 11 silver dollar. I couldn't help but notice that the RCM coin is 36mm diameter - same as the SDs I collect, just a thicker planchet to support the coin's convex shape.
