It's typical Machine Doubling. The doubled part is falttened and shelf-like, and the "doubling" takes up part of the normal profile of the devices. Two sure signs that it's Machine Doubling. On a doubled die of the nature you're looking for there, the letters would be wider than normal, they would have notches at the sharp corners where the two corners were hubbed into the die next to one another, and the doubling would be a carbon copy of the normal letters.

For reference sake, take a look at this: http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/...ie_state=mds

Hello, just when I thought I'd gone thru most of my cents looking for errors... :)

Guess I'm not as finished as I thought. Great link Coppercoins! I've seen some of the varities in my collection, but assumed a lot of them were because of being in curculation/damage,etc. I'd better re-evaluted them.

Thanks!

I will search my coins till the day I die, I have found I can be a bit stubborn though. A coin like this one, I wanted to be a doubled die sooo bad. But it is what it is and that must be Mechanical Doubling.
