Interesting thread, I too like collecting silver coins. I first got my silver coins in the early eighties, they were given to me by a neighbor at the time, I was about 12 and I still have them.
I dont have many, but from time to time I'm on the look out for additions.
Best of luck with the adventure and will be nice to see the updated thread.
I have some doubles of coins to sell if you are interested? I can send you pics and you can make me an offer if you like?

Have fun! One older type you can find for as little as $5 on ebay is the Hungary denar. You can probably find a date in the 1500s in reasonable condition within your budget.

These two just arrived today: 1959 Switzerland half franc (purity: 0.835, ASW: 2.09 g) 1944 Netherlands 10 cents (purity: 0.64, ASW: 0.9 g) Apologies for the poor picture quality for the time being. I'll be able to take much better pictures once I have access to my camera again in a few months.

Do you know if I can PM you through the forum? The only option I can find is by e-mail but I don't check the e-mail I used to sign up for this forum. I'd love to know your suggestions though.

@Ariette, nice additions!
Seeing those two coins reminded me of this one: Venezuela 50 centimos. This coin is also 83.5% silver, and has a portrait of Simon Bolivar, a key figure in the history of South America (the Venezuelan currency is called the Bolivar). You can find a nice example well within your budget, and it would broaden your collection to another continent.

@Ariette, CCF only allows emails between members; there is no integrated PM feature. You can send your preferred email via email however.

Here's a nice contrast to all the small coins I've been getting lately. I picked this one up at auction last week for just a hair over melt: 1966 Australia 50 cents (purity: 0.8, ASW: 10.62 g)

Fun! I've done this for years, hunting through dealer's melt tubs as well as the notebooks many of them keep for foreign coins. Sonetimes the coins in the notebooks have old prices and sell for less than melt. At one time I had a big pile of UK sterling 3 pence, but I liquidated the little things. Here's an example of a saved silver melt coin. Dealers are good at keeping the fakes out because they're selling to scrap metals companies...no one is chintzier than them....

@ Ariette: Nice pick up at the price. I would have done the same, and would have added it to my separate accumulation of these.
Nevertheless Australian dealers usually have these in bulk and also sell them at little above melt in typically AU /low MS condition.
Also nevertheless, there lots of World silver coins such as common American, Canadian or British silver coins that can also be obtained in AU / low MS condition at tiny margins above melt. These coins are also in the core of my collection of World silver coins, just as the Australian 50 Cents takes it's place in your collection.
Any common silver coin with a nice white color, and obvious radial luster, looks nice when it takes place in a collection of World silver coins.

I recently scrolled through the world coin auctions on ebay and placed bids at 50 cents per gram ASW on a lot of them. They are ending in the next few days and I'm eager to see whether I can snag any of them. If so, this would seem like an economical way of expanding my collection.
