Hello Everyone,

I am wondering if 1944 centavos from the Philippines are made of shell case brass like the American cents of that year since they were minted in Denver and San Francisco.

NGC and Numista both list it as bronze, but as they aren't infallible, I'm still not completely sold. But, assuming they are right, why are they bronze? Perhaps due to an agreement / contract that stipulates the composition?

Any thoughts or input would be appreciated, thanks.

The wartime brass alloy consisted of 95% copper and 5% zinc.

How 'bout a peek at the OMM?

Maybe they say bronze for simplicity. Suggesting the alloy contains some part of tin.
Basically brass is copper/zinc. Bronze is copper/tin.
But if you examine the mechanical properties of common copper alloys, you find perhaps a good dozen or more varieties.
All with different percentages of metals.
Nominal compositions of cartridge brass is 70/30 copper/zinc.
Naval brass is copper/zinc/tin.
Gunmetal varies with copper/zinc/tin + other elements.
Who can say with exactness just what was in the melting pot?

Thanks fioti! But at the risk of sounding stupid, what is the OMM?

Ah, I get it!

I didnt mean that it was a D over S. I was asking about coins minted in both Denver and San Fran. Sorry for the inaccurate title. Thanks fioti, for familiarizing me with the acronym.

As far as I know, 1944 1 centavos coins from the Philippines were minted only in San Francisco. Denver did produce some Philippine coinage, but only silver issues.
