@NC808, the answer to your question is in the dozens of CCF threads talking about the resulting damage. Here is one of the best (by @spruett):

Soft PVA flips OK for a short time.
Dealers send coins through the post in soft PVC flips all of the time.
Not OK for the longer term, especially for bronze coins and to a lesser extent, silver coins. The softener gasses out over the longer time, and may chemically react with the coins in the flip, which is in contact with the PVC.

Use PVA (Acetate) or Mylar materials instead. PVA is used for food storage (found in supermarket food packaging), so it is OK for coins as well.

Mylar is the clear material used in cardboard flips. Also used in thicker semi stiff sheet in banknote albums.

For extra protection, I sometimes make a 1.8' x 1.8" PVA flip, and put that inside a standard Mylar / cardboard flip. Do that mainly with softer gold coins to protect them from physical impact with other coins in the album.

From personal experience, silver does not like pvc. After about a year, two at the most, a light green substance attacks the surface. Went from full luster MS to a dull, distracting look. Acetone dip at that point, air dry (do not rub!) and into a non-pvc flip or Air-Tite holder.

Many people get confused due to seeing plastic piping for their home called PVC and think if it's OK for my house water why is it bad for coins. What people are basically unaware of is what is added to normal PVC to make it more pliable. That substance is sort of not stable and tends to leak out of the PVC. It is not used in PVC piping since that piping does not have to be pliable or excessively pliable. As such added substances leak out they tend to attack metals which is why it is just not a good idea to store coins in PVC.
