I was kind of hoping that when these coins came back , they would be pretty much the same grades. I guess I wanted to see how consistent and/or accurate a TPG would be. I could see a coin or two being off by one or two points...maybe an FB (Full Bands) designation missed...I was shocked and truly disappointed in the outcome. Not because they downgraded some coins, every single coin was upgraded anywhere from 2 to 3 points !

Of course that is a good thing for the dealer, but as people that trust these companies for accuracy and consistency... I don't even know what to think. The original 30 coin submission under the "bulk submission" came back with 26 MS-63 coins and 4 MS-64 ( From what I remember- I know they were all 63-64, no 65's or higher) and none were designated FB. The return of this full price $800 submission resulted in the following grades :

MS-65......9 coins

MS-65FB....10 coins

MS-66......8 coins

MS-66FB....3 coins

So...what exactly does this mean ? Could they accidentally undergrade 30 coins ? Were the "good" graders off that day ? Hope they aren't IF I ever send them a coin. I could see one or two..maybe three..but 30 ? I would love to hear comments on this, I may put a link to this in the TPG forum so everyone interested might get a chance to see this.

Original Post Follows :

I have wanted one of these since I heard the story of them in the shop I now work at. It seems that the Owner was one of the principles involved in the recovery of most of these coins from the area around Sandusky Ohio area. When he heard where they were being found he went and bought all the dimes he could get, and he found a few hundred of these dimes without the P Mint Mark. Over the years he has tried to get someone to add this spot to their albums to no avail. In my opinion, it is more deserving of that status than say the 22 no D cent, an over polished die. The dies for these were never punched with a Mint Mark , not just polished off with over use...I guess I am biased

Anyway...this past week one of my jobs was to break out 30 of these dimes from their PCGS holders for re-submission. This should be interesting When they first got these dimes graded at PCGS, they sent two batches of coins ( I don't know how many altogether) The first batch was sent paying full price for each coin. The grades they got back were MS-64 to MS-67. The second batch was sent under a bulk rate...it took almost six months to get them back, they could not find them at first, and after many excuses they finally got them back...MS 62 to MS-64. Seems kinda fishy to me , I will be sure to let you know how it pans out this time- $800 more dollars to certify these AGAIN- will they come back higher ?

So....I saw this one in the box, the 2x2 says it was found in circ 4/6/82 in Toledo. It is labeled AU, but has very very little rub and just a few nicks, a real slider IMO. I bought it for $60, and if they ever decide that Roosevelt's deserve a key, it could turn out to be cheap Pics are through the 2x2, they might be a bit fuzzy

Interesting story! The grading difference is rather surprising.

I agree that if you have a slot for the 3-legged Buff, you need a slot for this variety.
Rest in Peace

Doesn't surprise me at all. Slobbed coin grades are BS from the get-go. I think it was one of the 1804 dollars has gone from a 45 to a 62 over the last 20 years.

Once again, this establishes that the "experts" can't hit a grade within 3 points, so what exactly did you pay for when you paid that huge premium for a MS70 over a MS69?

Well I would like to start off by saying I think it is a rip off in the way that you pay these fees to get coins done and then they come back with bad grades. These companies should really pay more attention to detail in these coins that the people send in to them. I really do think it is all about the money on there end and on our end we get the crappy end of the stick so to speak. When you send that many coins out at onetime you would think they would be better grades but they do not see it that way, all they see is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ signs. Ok enough of me blabbing just wanted to get that off my chest.
