Any one know what Y-583 means on this PCGS 1996 China Panda Slab? I'm assuming it's a variety but can't find of what. This year has small and large date with different codes.

The Y number is based on the numbering of some (usually Asian) coin types by Richard S. Yeoman in his Whitman book about world coins. Much like a KM #

Thanks scstrawn;

For the 1996 Large Date Panda PCGS lists "PAN-270B" and for the Small Date "PAN-270A". Can't find Y-583 anywhere.

Anyone have the Yeoman book?

PCGS isn't always consistent in recording that kind of stuff. The reference I saw for this coin just says "varieties exist", so no determination about whether this is LD or SD, based on the Y#.

I do, but it's from 1970. Not much help, sorry.

It isn't a variety, it is a type number.

Yeoman did the two most commonly used books on world coins (Coins of the World, and Modern coins of the World) before 1972 when Krause Publications started the Standard Catalog of World Coins. The Yeoman books gave each different coin TYPE a Y# (Note that was coin types not varieties.) When the SCWC began, it used Yeoman's Y#'s, but each year a few more countries would be renumbered with KM#'s. China is one of the few countries that are still listed the SCWC with Y#'s. Some of China has been switched over. The old Y# 583 is now KM# 892. That is from the 37th edition of the SCWC. From time to time a country will get renumbered but that is probably accurate.

Thanks Conder101;

So Y-583 and KM-892 both mean 1996 10 Yuan Panda whether it's large date, small date, or proof.

And PCGS uses PAN-270A for small date and PAN-270B for large date. I assume my coin was slabbed before two varieties were known.
