PCGS - We had a lot of great requests last week on #FanFriday including an 1870-S Liberty Seated dollar. There is no official Mint record of any being produced, and there are only 12 known, with just one in mint state. The one seen here is graded PCGS AU58.

I would suspect a first strike, perhaps a branch proof, would be in the cornerstone of the Granite Lady.

Brand new dies and only 12 coins from them all of the would originally be sharp and crisp and look like proof strikes. They would made to produce a coin for the cornerstone. Records show that a full set of coins were placed in the cornerstone even though records for the production of a few have not been found. And while records that the quarter was made have been found, no example has ever been found. It is the only example of 70 S coinage that is currently unknown.

Such a small mint mark, but I would not mind placing that beauty in my Everyman Type Collection. Paying for it would be a different story.
