1888 Indian Variety S2? - Coin Community Forum

cpfull Pillar of the Community United States 603 Posts	Posted 09/02/2008 9:08 pm Hi, I just got my Indian cent attribution guide and was looking at a few Indians, I think this may be a S2. I can't be sure from the obverse, but it does have the begining of the reverse die crack from die stage B. I was hoping someone could help me out. first the 18 here is the 2nd 8 the last 8 and a close up of the upper loop and last the die crack on the reverse, it's hard to see, but it is there. KurtS Pillar of the Community United States 5318 Posts	Posted 09/02/2008 9:33 pm Hi, Since your coin is a bit corroded and the markers for this variety are pretty slight, it could be argued the "noise" level is almost the same magnitude as "signal"--if that makes sense. That said, I almost think I see an S2 as well--I only say that because I've studied this one in detail. As a bit of confirmation, you might take a shot of the necklace area--there should be a MPD emerging from the last bead. cpfull Pillar of the Community United States 603 Posts	Posted 09/02/2008 10:06 pm I was hoping you would respond Kurt,and yes your statement did make sense (I take x-rays, we use the same terminology for the main beam and scatter.) Here is a pic of the full date, I think it looks like the same position as yours. I can see something where the one in the neck should be in hand, where I can tilt it, but can't get a pic through the scope. I am fairly certain this is a dug coin, or at least soaked in something, but its fun to find varieties. Report this Post to the Staff

I'm seeing enough "datapoints" to confirm it for me, and I believe I see something emerging from the necklace too. I think the die gouge (or "7" perhaps) in the upper loop of the 8 clinched it for me. Quote: its fun to find varieties. Discovery is everything to me...regardless of value or whether it slabs.
