Do reeded silver coins ever get toned on the edge only? This is my only Barber dime so I can't compare it to another, but you can see it sandwiched between a 1940 Merc and a 1956 Roosie. If I didn't know better I'd think this was a brass coin clad in silver.

I'm sure the mint didn't even know what a clad coin is in 1901 .

It weighs 2.40 g. Tenth of a gram weight loss due to wear I'm sure.

Just environmental toning, I'd guess.

Based on the photos I would say yes it's toned since being relatively close to that of the obverse and reverse in color. Overall, a solid Fine.

I'm not an expert at detection but this coin looks wizzed to me. Small scratches from every direction, sort of circular in pattern on the rim towards the center of the coin, obverse and reverse.
Reeded edge could be untouched and the original toning there and at some point someone thought it would be a good idea to machine polish it front and back to make it a bit prettier for whatever their reason, maybe to try to remove some bad scratches.

I'm not an expert in detecting this but these pictures have me feeling it's suspect of wizzing.

Can the edge only get heavily toned? Yes in a roll rolled in paper with a heavy sulfur content. The edges ar the only thing touching the paper and the coins adjacent to it help protect the obv and rev. So the toning occurs first and fastest on the edge. Later the roll is broken and mixed with other coin and you have a coin toned on the edge only.

Conder101 BAM that is exactly the kind of answer I came here for, meaning whether or not it applies to this coin (which could be whizzed for all I know), it perfectly fits how a coin COULD tone on the edge only. I don't know why I didn't think of that myself but obviously I didn't so I'm glad I asked here. Thanks man!!
