I was wondering if the damage on this coin makes it just a novelty to keep or is it still worth something?

Sadly, meaningless punchmarks like this greatly harm a coin's value, whereas historical counterstamps can enhance a coin's worth.

It looks to me like holes were attempted; this, possibly to make a "whizzer." Coins bearing two holes were strung, the string was twisted tight and then pulled at both ends. The result was a whizzing sound.
