So ....

The Pius XI 5 Lire bearing the portrait of the pope was issued more than 3 years (1929-1937) and hence does not meet the current criteria

The Pius XI 5 Lire jubilee bearing the portrait of the pope was issued for 1 year (1933), but this is not my coin

The Sede Vacante 5 lire was issued for 1 year (1939) but does not bear the portrait of a pope, and is not my coin.

The Pius XII 5 Lire bearing the portrait of the pope was issued for not more than 3 years (1939-1941), and hence is still in the running.

@tdz, is your coin a Pius XII 5 Lire dated 1940?

Good old Pious XII.

From Wikipedia:

Quote:
Pius avoided explicit denunciations of Hitlerism or Stalinism, establishing the "impartial" public tone which would become controversial in later assessment of his pontificate: "A full statement of the doctrinal stand to be taken in face of the errors of today, if necessary, can be put off to another time unless there is disturbance by calamitous external events; for the moment We limit Ourselves to some fundamental observations.

In the meantime, he transferred all the assets to the USA for safe keeping.

One quick one, then I'm away until 1.

Is the coin dated before the Wright Brothers first powered flight?
