Quote: Siberian Russian would fit Did Russia actually mint colonial coinage, or was it just standard Russian coinage that circulated?* The hint suggests that this coin was minted in Europe by a European empire. Since all of South America is excluded, that looks to exclude Portuguese colonies. If Central or North America, that could be Spain, but it seems the vast majority of that coinage was minted in Mexico during this time. France may also be a player in North America, but the timeline doesn't seem right except for the few years before the Louisiana Purchase. I also thought of the Netherlands, but it's all islands. Britain may still be in play when it comes to Canada. I did not find any coins fitting the date range that were colonial and not minted in Canada. The same goes for Quebec. Quote: The Hudson bay Company would also currently fit. I don't see anything that fits the timeline. We still have plenty of questions left to narrow this down. Finding out where this coin was minted is important, then maybe narrowing down the date. *Not a Q for the Gamemaster.

Quote: Did Russia actually mint colonial coinage, or was it just standard Russian coinage that circulated?* They have coins issued specifically for Siberia, though I believe most of what was used in Alaska was scrip. I think the date range might be a little late for the coin though. I don't know much about the HBC other than their currency was based on a beaver. If it is neither Spanish nor north of the 44th parallel I will be at a loss.

When this coin was minted, had the law been passed allowing Stephen F. Austin and the Old Three Hundred to colonize Texas?

Quote: If it is neither Spanish nor north of the 44th parallel I will be at a loss. Well, between us we have three outstanding questions on the table that will narrow down date, location and empire. That will leave us with nine remaining questions. It seems we need to wait a few hours to get those answers and then decide how to proceed.

That would be cutting "north of panama" pretty close.

Quote: Call me crazy, but I'm thinking Venezuela I will call you crazy based on what has been provided. The question was: Quote: Was this coin meant to be used primarily north of Panama City, Panama? And the answer was: Quote: 7. In fact, north of Panama. That means that the country is north of Panama because there is no country that has a majority of its land north a Panama other than Panama itself and everything to the north. This implies that even the parts of Colombia and Venezuela that are south enough don't fit.

We still need answers to the three outstanding questions. I can't speculate any further without those.

1. This coin is not from the USA. 2. This coin was minted before 1845. 3. This coin was minted after 1776. 4. This coin is not from Europe. Hint #1: It may have been struck in Europe but was meant to be used in a European colony. 5. Minted after 1800. 6. This coin was meant to be used somewhere in the Americas. 7. In fact, north of Panama. 8. But this country is not primarily an island. In other words, there are some number of islands off shore from the mainland. 9. In fact this country lies north of the 44th north parallel. 10. While Spain made a half-hearted attempt to colonize this country, I think that Spain was much more focused on regions to the south. 11. This coin was minted after 1823. Hint #2: While these pieces like this one did circulate, it is best described as a bank token.

The Spanish hintanswer would put us in BC as the only Spanish settlement in Canada was at Nootka Sound.

Quote: Is this token from Lower Canada? One of the things that I love about this thread is that not only do I learn stuff when I'm the one guessing, but also I learn stuff when I'm the one answering questions. I'm not entirely sure how to answer this question yet, so please give me a little while. Actually, now that I think of it, you could potentially take this lack of clarity in my mind as a hint. Or maybe it was just a long day at work.
