I recently came across a collection of Mercury dimes in an old blue book. I have 14 or so low to mid grade coins (VG-XF) that have a beautiful gold and iridescent toning to them. I don't mess with toned coins so need some guidance. Do they have any more value to a collector given that they are not Mint state but still toned?
Thanks.
Rest in Peace

They sound lovely. DO NOT clean them or alter them in any way.

Value of a Coin is determined by numerical grade plus the eye appeal.

Eye appeal can be good or bad and effects value up or down.

Price is determined by the number of people searching for and able to buy that value of that coin.

We would love to see

Thanks. I do not plan on cleaning them. I was just going to put them in my Mercury book and the extras in my four sons books. However since they are toned, I wondered about trading them off to someone looking specifically for toned coins. I will try to take some pictures and upload tonight.

A few pics would help. Sometimes that "toning" is evidence of old cleaning.

One thing about toning is it normally continues until the coin is completely gone. I dislike toning of any kind.

I for one tend to frown upon toned circulated silver coins .They just don't look right .
