I found this 1969 D LMC with a floating roof and no FG. I normally do not keep these things as most of the time I can see traces of the designers initials, no traces on this one whatsoever. I know all too well what causes this and I know there is no premium for this but because it is RB I decided to keep it and post it. I think its a pretty good example, if nothing else to use for educational purposes.

TBH I can't believe this recived a FS-901 designation. It's just die polishing.

Me either, but I don't think PCGS recognizes this anymore.

Un-slabbed 1969 D no FG (initials) or possible FS-901's, seems to be a reoccurring subject lately. If only some if not all of these recently posted had been (PCGS) graded back then, who knows.

Pay attention to grade and recent auction prices. Also note the different obverse dies in the two links. Thanks, Doug.

Adding: 1969 and 1970 had similar issues. The common denominators are still up in the air for me or are they? In 1969 the mint started hubbing dies without the alignment lugs. Also introduced (a new RDV) RDV-002. In 1971 and seemingly 1972 they used the same RDV-002 along with a second RDV-008(?) design.

In 1973 RDV-003 was implemented and the alignment lugs were reintroduced. The die polishing issue seems to go away after.

Edit: added actual RDV numbers.

Halo, I most certainly agree this comes up a lot. And 99.9% of the time you can see traces of the FG. I've had a ton of those. This is the only one that I have found that bears no trace of the initials. When I first started out I would get pretty happy about a "Floating Roof". Now, not so much as they are so common. I just assumed if it were a floating roof cent it was worth something. They are not, it has to have the floating roof plus no trace of the designers initials to carry a premium. If it has even a shadow of the designers initials it is only a little more than face. Honestly, as well struck as this cent is and as deep as the devises are around the rim as well as the Memorial itself, I have kind of a hard time buying in to the over polishing theory.
