I just bought my first proof sets today, the 1964 and 1981. I already had the 1981 mint set, but that was the only one I had. Both of the new sets look great, and I'm thinking about buying more from different years. How many of you are collecting the sets, and how hard is it to get most of them? How much fun/not fun has it been collecting them?
Thanks.

I have prrof sets back to 1955 ,, from there on back they get fairly expensive . so what I have been doing is collecting the mint sets one coin at a time . like this . This is the D portion of the 1947- mint set . I have the first three coins of the 47-P part of the set and two of the coins for the S mint portion . This is actually more fun collecting like this since I get to pick my coins ,,and they take some time and effort unlike buying the sets already packaged with no control over the coins inside .

To get them all is quite the endeavor !!... I have quite a few "old ones" from my Dad....and have been keeping up with the new ones so far. Uncirculated, Proof, and Silver Proof. But I don't think I'll ever be able to complete the whole run ! Metalmans method is a very interesting and fun idea !...

I'm collecting proof sets from my birth year, from as many countries as I can find.

We collect the proof and mint sets. Also have a subscribt to the mint for the sets that come out each year.
My 7yr old is really into the hobby, as for right now I find the cello and hard plastic cases the best defense against little finger prints.

Everyone one of my proof and mint sets were broken apart, the coins put in the respective Dansco albums. I am getting some silver proof sets for my son that was born this year.

Wouldn't it be funny if my order came in before yours? No?

I started sending in for many Proof and Uncirculated sets back in the late 40's or early 50's. Not sure anymore. Since then I always order from 10 to 15 of each. Not that many back then though. No money for that when I was a kid, only some for myself. Somewhere along the way I started giving then as Christmas Presents. Not sure when. It used to be fun getting them and opening them up to see what they looked like. Then they went into a large cardboard box with all the other ones never to be seen by man nor beast. Well maybe some spiders. For probably the last ten or more years now I don't even open up the ones I keep, just add them all to those boxes with the others. It has become a habit more than anything else but I just can't stop collecting those. Some time back I also ordered some of those Prestige Proof sets but since they take up so much room I gave those away. Just old age creeping up.

How do you order the new sets from the mint? Is it cheaper to order straight from the mint, rather than from a coin shop?
Thanks for all the info.

Quote: How do you order the new sets from the mint? Go to the United States Mint website and "sign up"........that's what I did and then you have a standing account with them. There you'll see the "online catalog" and you can order any "Modern" set or coin that you want to at your leisure !

On some things it very well can be.......depends on what the item is and which coin dealer shop you go to I guess.... Just add shipping and handling to what you see on the U.S. Mint website and contrast and compare with your coin shop. They only sell basically '08 material, but sometimes they'll sell things until they're gone which can leave some "previous year" items still around for awhile yet. For instance, You can still buy 2001 Kennedy Rolls on the Website (as well as, of course the 2008 Kennedy's) 2007 Presidential dollars can still be bought and other related materials to those. Some First Day Coin Covers of the State Qtrs. can still be bought from years ago.....

I love the proof sets.
I just started collecting this year, so I plan on getting the silver proofs from this year forward. and also try to get silver proofs from the beginning of the quarters to now (1999-present). Then I plan on getting a bicentenial proof set because I think that it would also be interesting. This is going to take me awhile to do, but its a possible goal in 4-5 years.
Oh and while I'm on it, is 1999 offered in silver? or did that start in 2000? I know that 1999 silver isn't listed in the blackbook

Started getting proof sets in 1962 when I was a kid with a paper route. My grandparents gave me proof sets for Christmas starting in 1968 and I pick them up on my own now that they are gone.

I have most of the proof sets from 60s up missing a lot in the later 90s though Quote: Oh and while I'm on it, is 1999 offered in silver? They have been offered I think since 1992! The 1999 is pretty expensive right now around the 275 300 range
