I picked this up in some change from a store a few weeks ago and first just noticed it was a funky gold color but saw some extra dates stamped on it this morning.

I know the 1960 & 1985 were obviously added along with the gold tone post mint, but does anyone know why?

Are there more than one of these oddities floating around?

What's the story behind it?

As you said, it was stamped and plated post mint. It is probably commemorating the 25th anniversary of Kennedy's presidential election.

I have one too. Got all excited when I didn't see the bi-colored clad on the edge of a 1972 half but was disappointed after I weighed it.

Any plating job like that will not add enough metal to alter the weight significantly.

Quick weigh it. It may be pure Gold. Or Platinum with Gold plating. More than likely it is a bit of Copper or Brass plating. Sure wonder why people do that. The time it takes and then to just put in out in change. Weird.
