The dies were terribly overused,

in the no mint set years.

VLDS stands for Very Late Die State. This die was at its end of its useful life. Very heavy Die Deterioration and heavy die flow lines are showing. This die should have been retired a long, long time ago. 1983 Nickels are notorious for these very crappy and poor quality coins. http://goccf.com/t/317950 http://goccf.com/t/336470

1982 and 83 were embarrassing years for coin production. Fresh from the mint and free from marks VLDS coins could theoretically grade MS-67 but they would make for some BU (butt ugly) 67s.
