These ripples are on both sides of 1964 penny. As seen from the pix the marks are UNDER the date and BETWEEN the roo's paws so I can't see how this could be PMD. Is this a planchet flaw? Yep, I'm still learning the lingo.

Well, well, well ... I've just found similar marks on both sides of a 1963 penny so I suppose this is a pretty common occurrence.

Nice pics.
Most likely a planchet issue.

and here is the same effect in the 1963 penny. Must have been a bad bunch of planchets?!

Really? Coinfrog? Did dies get the chance to get rusty? Have you ever seen this effect before? I am SO curious especially as I just found it on 2 different years. (So far, but many more coins to look through in my mother's collection).
Input please .....

Worn out dies. Very common especially on 60's pennies and halfpennies. Trying to make them last until the decimal changeover in 1966.

.

Prepared dies which were stored without adequate greasing will rust.

These dies were flogged to breaking point especially on 1964. It is not a planchet issue.
