I've been assembling a collection of coins from Seychelles (pre independence) for a few years. This is a really tough country to complete, but I'm getting there. Recently a few came up on ebay that I don't have (I have by far the majority). Granted, my catalog is a little bit old, but these coins have very low catalog values. However, most coins from Seychelles have mintages less than 100,000 with some as low as 5000 so the supply side is guaranteed to be low. 5 Cents 1968 VF+/XF, my bid $8, sold $8.51, catalog $3 10 Cents 1970 VF,my bid 6 pounds, sold 6.5 pounds, catalog 50c 2 Cents 1965 Unc,my bid $9, sold $9.50,catalog $4 5 Cents 1971 Unc, my bid $10, won, catalog $2.50 Is my catalog extremely outdated for prices on these things? Is this a phenomenon seen with coins from other countries? Are people simply feeling that coins with mintages this low are underpriced and the market is trying to catch up on historically low prices? Is there just one or two other people somewhere in the world that are even more obsessed than me with finishing this country (these all went to different buyers)?

Jay's Dad- Do you have to have the coins in UNC condition? A few years ago I came across a small hoard of British Seychelles coins, and snagged quite a few of them. The coins themselves are circulated, but the details are sharp. If they suit your taste, I will be more than happy to sell/trade for whatever you think fair. If they aren't to your taste, that's fine too :)

CV prices on these coins are pretty low in my opinion. Most of them were minted in quantities of less than 100,000 (many less than 50,000) and they were meant to be circulated. I have a set that I've been working on for quite a while, but run into the same problems that you have...too many people bidding high on the same coins.

Just a comment on ebay - it seems that any coins that dont come up all the time seem to cost quite a bit more than catalog values. I noticed that my behaviour is the same. If it fills that hole in the collection I might be willing to spend just a little bit more, albeit grudgingly. I guess that others might have money to burn and can push the values even higher?

Package sent! The post office gave me a big stink about using duct tape on a package, telling me it falls off! Its duct tape! I used to hold on the muffler of my car with it. They insisted that I could not use duct tape or masking tape (though I understand the latter). I could only use clear mailing tape, which they happened to sell right over there. Seemed like an interesting potential scam. Has anyone else come across this? I have sent hundreds of packages in the past which were wrapped using duct tape, the stuff is almost invincible.

As Red-Green would say: If there's duct tape on the roll, there's still work to be done!

Got the package Kitty. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I hope you get my package soon. I got four coins off my wish list. I think the fact that these are in VF condition actually makes them far more interesting. With many dates, Unc is far more common than circulated grades and you start to wonder if these were ever used. Now I've got proof that they were.

:D I did get your package, probably a day before you got mine. *Dances* There was quite a selection of coins in there! Thank you very much.
I am so glad that you are pleased with the Seychelles coins I could provide you with. Here I was worried that they weren't in high enough grade for you, and you go and like them better for having circulated! :D I'm glad I could help. Thanks again!

I'm glad the package made it, the guy at the post office who swore that you could not send a package with duct tape really made me grumpy. I bought the postage for the package and took it with me. The guy said that if I tried to mail it, it would be returned to me. I mailed it from home and it wasn't returned. I truly suspect a scam as the post office tries to get us to use only those things sold by the post office (that clear mailing tape).

I think a lot of it actually depends on what Post Office you go to. If you live in a large enough area, you might have several choices. We just moved across town, but for 8 years I had a fairly good Post Office, although toward the end I started having a few packages go missing, and they also started not delivering packages or those pink slips. I went in to file an insurance claim once, and lo and behold my packet was right there on the shelf waiting for me. Apparently someone wanted it so bad they were just writing dates on the thing for "attempted" deliveries. ... I wasn't aware the Post Office did special delivery on Sunday!
And then we moved. Now, my Post Office branch is so bloody big and busy I can't do anything in there. So, on my way to work, I stop off in a little rural office instead. He doesn't care what I'm mailing, as long as it isn't illegal, and just happily puts the stamp on the package and moves along. :)
If you've got the option, go with the smaller Post Office every time. It will keep you saner. ;)
