@1369, first welcome to CCF. Second, If you are looking for guesses on the date, mine is 1941. It is hard to tell for sure with this level of damage from circulation.

It appears to be environmental damage.
But it's so bad that I'd clean it.
That can't hurt it anymore than it has been.
Of course it would end up as a space filler.
