Would you clean...? (1881 Shield nickel)

Would-You-Clean...?-Once-Again---1881-Shield-Nickel

Typically, as a rule, I'd say no. No questions, no problems, just no. In this case, I wonder if the coin could be worth more cleaned than tarnished as badly as it is. The considerations would be #1, I hate the look of most of the cleaned nickels I've seen, and #2, I'm not planning on selling. This one is just for me.

Anyone have any thoughts or advice?

to CCF. Only use 100% pure acetone, not common nail polish remover and nothing else.In future posts, please remove coin from holders when possible and both sides. Also, please rotate properly before posting.

Would you clean

Blanket no, cleaning bad.

Would I conserve?

Yes, with what John1 told you to do. Conservation is ok, but only if done correctly.

Acetone won't hurt, otherwise leave well enough alone.

PCGS estimates a surviving population of 750 out of a mintage of 68,800.

Since you are keeping it for yourself, you might want to leave it alone.

Acetone won't hurt that coin, but it won't help it either. The only way to get rid of that dead dull gray appearance would be to strip the surface off the coin, and you would be left with a unnatural, cleaned appearances coins that would still have the porous surfaces. Leave it alone,it is already the best that it can be, and even like that desirable to the right people.

Thank you guys again. Going with the thought that acetone wouldn't hurt, even if it wouldn't help, and given that I plan to keep this coin for myself, I went ahead and gave it a gentle bath. No miracle cures here, but I like the results, and again, since it's staying in the collection...

Thanks one more time.

I'm impressed, it did more for it than I thought it would (or the photography is better, taking pictures out of the holder helps tremendously.) A very desirable coin.

I think you did a good job...clean the coin only to preserve it. Coin conservation as is conservation in all fields should be acceptable if stated.
