I thought I had posted this story earlier this year, but after searching I couldn't find it. This video of John Frost with the Liberty Seated Collectors Club giving a talk about it. A
Gobrecht dollar was sold by family to a local dealer in a fair and honest transaction at what was thought to be fair market value for the coin. Later a letter was discovered indicating the coin was the possession of President Andrew Jackson who had given to the collector's family. This documented pedigree made this particular
Gobrecht dollar of enormous value. Hear the story of how the original owner finally regained possession of their family treasure.
I have my own similar story with a particular
VAM I was talked into selling to a friend, I really didn't want to but his insistent begging paid off. He later sold it, I then wanted another copy down the road, after searching I finally bought another one in an auction of a collector friend that had passed on. I win the coin, and when it comes in the mail, much to my surprise, it's still in my original holder with all the notes he had done on it for a paper he was writing, before he passed away. Very cool to have my original dollar back in hand with a bunch of other pertinent information attached.
This story is full of loss, sadness and grief along with discovery and history, ending with the reunion of the owner and the coin happy days again!
