I really like the 1858-S Eagle. But for a coin this scarce, why so many? ebay is currently listing 10% of the entire PCGS Population of 62.

And why so expensive? Make me a deal I can't refuse....

Sellers of big ticket items do not expect them to sell on ebay.
They are just advertising them.
Look for upcoming large auctions and you'll find some of them list there.
Stack's and Bowers has a big auction in a week or so.

Gold coins as well as Morgan silver dollars are very popular right now so their prices are inflated accordingly.

Only 5% of the PCGS population, 3 coins. The other 3 are NGC and don't count against the PCGS population.

I realize that it's not the same grading service Gary. It's still a big chunk of a small population to appear at one time. Maybe just an odd coincidence, and not what I'd call buyer's market prices.

Wow. A bit high, indeed. Perhaps the recent rise in the gold market? Or a shift in the market place driving them higher?

The problem with scarce coins is that they sometimes have scarce buyers.

I agree that the ebay listings are probably "teaser" or "come-on" listings where the sellers are not reasonably expecting to get a purchase at those prices, but list it anyway for advertising and also just in case there's that one in a million collector out there who's so desperate for one right this very second that they'll overpay by a lot to scratch the itch.

Two sellers have four of the coins. Maybe an estate being dispersed?
