Latest Denarius pick up...
Born Marcus Julius Gessius Bassianus Alexianus in October 208AD in modern day Arqa (Akkar province) Lebanon. At the age of 14 he became emperor of Rome following the assassination of his cousin Elagabalus. Because of his young age his mother the powerful Julia Mamaea was the ruling force using her own son as a puppet to gain more power and importance. He was the last of the Severan Dynasty rulers and was assassinated in March 235AD, at the ripe old age of 26, by his own disgruntled troops after trying to compromise(bribe) rather than fight the Germanic tribes who had crossed the Rhine and Danube.

Severus Alexander. 222-235 AD. AR Denarius (2.89 gm, 20mm). Rome mint. Struck 228 AD.
Obverse: IMP SEV ALE-XAND AVG, laureate head right.
Reverse: PM TRPVII COSII PP, Mars standing right, holding shield and spear.
RIC IV 83;

Beautiful coin! The mint workers in Rome from the time of Alexander through Maximinus etc were really talented - maybe the iconography isn't as showy as earlier periods, but they are commonly found in almost prooflike quality - high relief, detailed and well-struck devices on smooth, lustrous fields. They really are underappreciated, IMO.

Nice pick up! Great detail and nice strike. I'd like to clean mine up a little and remove the green verdigris, but I'm not confident enough to do it.

A stunning coin. It makes me think back to the first ancient I ever bought. It is still one of my favourites in my collection.

Thanks guys I'm glad you like the coin!
@ maridvnvm..Lovely coin Martin with that superb detail of Mars..but I really like the serene look of Severus's portrait; great coin topped off with some nice toning..
@ travelcoin.. I like the verdigris and gives the coin nice character. Looks like he's exhaling green smoke...Cool coin! I'd leave it...
