This is a very recent purchase. I'm wondering about the amount and purity of the gold used in the layering. Thank you.

the amount of gold would be negligible, and the value of the gold , maybe a couple of cents.

The gold plating while insignificant in value adds to the overall appeal of the coin much like the gold plated SD in the premium proof sets.

This item in particular has eluded me many times in auctions. Despite the 15k mintage and original issue price of $60 the darn thing regularly sells for as much as double that with the commission.

@Proof Nut, check with your LCS; you should be able to buy one at issue.

Thanks Alex.

I'll keep looking but whenever they are on the bourse floor or in an auction, I can't seem to get them for the desired issue price. Patience will prevail!

It would be nice to know the purity of the gold used for the selective plating. The RCM produces gold coins at various levels of purity...I wonder if they have a standard for coins such as this SD? 14K? 24K?

@commems Far from an expert, but I have never heard of plating using anything less than 99.7% pure and the thickness could be anywhere between 0.125 and 5 microns thick.

@Universalcoins: Thank you very much for the response/info regarding the gold plating.

The high purity makes perfect sense when I stop and give it some thought!
