Hi all, I have noticed that most of coin collectors in several forums when talking about the 50 State Quarters, they mention the P and D mint but not the S mint. When I checked my Krause (2006), I found that most of the S mint quarters are mentioned as mintage number only some have a Prf-65 value while others dont e.g. The Iowa 2004S. Even some have no S mint e.g. Kansas When searching online coin stores, folders and albums have slots and holes for the P and D mint only but no S mint. Is the S mint coins not important, or difficult to collect or What? Please educate me. I am about to finish a 50 State Quarters set P and D and start a Lincoln Cent and Jeffeson Nickel set, and I dont know if I should search for the S mint coins or not ?

The S mint State Quarters are available in proof sets only. They were not issued for circulation.

Since 1968 San Francisco (S mint) has only produced proofs and Philly and Denver produce circulation coins.

Nope, not quite. San Francisco stopped minting business strikes in 1955 and did not mint any more coins until 1968. Proof sets were on haitus from 1965-67 and they resumed mintage in 1968 starting at San Fran for the first time. San Fran also minted business strike cents from 1968-1974, business strike nickels from 1968-70, and business strike SBA dollars in 1979 and 1980.

They also struck, without mintmarks, cents in 1978 - 1983 and dimes in 1975.

Yes Kansas has an "S" mint......both proof and silver. From a 2008 RedBook.... Kansas Proof "S" mint Qtr. mintage number listed at 3,262,960 coins... Kansas Silver Proof "S" mint Qtr. has a mintage number listed at 1,678,649

It is a 2005 issue quarter, so your '06 book obviously didn't have it yet......all these "books" go to print SO EARLY (a year and a half in advance sometimes!).....that I'm sure this is why you could find no listing....
And, I might say, that "mintage numbers" aren't always officially released/known in time for the printing of these "books", so, the following year, the mintage numbers would/will be updated accordingly.

Thanks for that addition Conder I knew there were more than the mint mark-less 65-67 coins but could not quite remember specifically so I just left them all out for simplicity's sake and just referenced coins with mint marks.

I wish they would mint some with a mint mark. Quote: Nope, not quite... Yeah, I was trying to give a simple answer since I didn't have the exact dates. Fatcat

In 1996, West Point minted a dime with a mint mark, but it was NIFC.

Quote: west point also minted a few hundred thousand pennies but didnt put mint marks on them because they knew they would be instantly withdrawn from circulation Change that number to many million. Records indicate that they minted cents for circulation from 1974 through 1985, however the numbers for each year are not clear. All are considered Philly mint cents since they are indistinguishable from Philly minted cents. West Point also minted most, if not all, of the 1974 aluminum cents...somewhere between 200,000 and 2,000,000 coins. Differences in reports make that number unclear as well.
