Hi Community,

I have recently inherited some US coins. I took them to a dealer and he tells me they have been cleaned/buffed. Can these coins be restored?

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there's no chance it can ever be restored, just use it as a education tool.

But show us what you have, upload pictures please.

Some pictures would give us an idea of what you have. Relative levels of cleaning go from a light, market-acceptable cleaning to abrasively, harshly cleaned. There's little that can be gleaned from "cleaned/buffed" without images.

to CCF. Photos would help. Any silver coins will still have silver value. Any key date coins may still have a small premium.

Note that many dealers are not the most honest people on Earth. Your dealer may have been telling the truth but also may have been exaggerating. This would give him a chance to buy your coins for a fraction of real value. If you really think your coins have been cleaned, and really show it, not much can be done to correct. However, even a cleaned coin of very low mintage and in great condition could still be worth lots of money. I suggest one remedy would be to place on an outside window ledge for several weeks or even months. This would help tone down any harsh cleaning appearances. Next you should get a copy of the Red Book by Whitman Publishing and check your coins for rarity.

When I am coin roll hunting, I take the worst coin and clean it before throwing it back in the wild.

Don't know why. Makes me happy.

Depends what was done and how bad it is. Technically basically any cleaning can be fixed if you wear it down enough, but not all of them need significant or even wear to fix.

This. This is a very real possibility including that they may have just been lying to get the coins for a better price. Unfortunately a lot of dealers especially local/smaller ones will do this to get better prices especially on an inherited collection from a first time probably one off customer.

There's a lot of factors at play here wed need to see the coins to some extent to see what's going on. If they are all polished MS coins, to put a shine on them, then as was said carrying one around in your pocket for a bit will take the shine off and turn it into an AU and not a problem coin anymore however it won't get MS prices, and it won't get a "MS details cleaned" grade.

Really depends on a coin by coin basis. The value, the condition, and if in fact it has been cleaned or the dealer is trying to get your coins at a steal.

If someone shined up a XF coin trying to make it look MS that can be problematic. What it comes down to is the rarity and condition of the coins to determine the best course of action. Sometimes it's better just to leave it as "MS details cleaned" of there's a dramatic difference in value due to rarity between AU and MS.

As I said determining the best course of action should be done on a case by case basis and while knowledgeable, dealers aren't always right, nobody is always right, it was his opinion and it always benefits a dealer to talk down a sellers coins so they can pay less. Not saying they all do it, just saying it can happen.

So how about we start with an example picture of one of the coins in question and see what everyone says here?
